Week 6

22 maart 2020 - Leidschendam, Nederland

Sadly, due to corona spreading faster and faster every passing day, we have decided to get me back to the Netherlands. This decision was made on Monday.

After the decision to go back home was made, collecting data for my project wasn't really important any more. I had so little data anyways, so even if I got a lot of data this week, it wouldn't even get close to having enough data to write a report. I collected the camera's I had placed prior to the weekend and looked at the footage. One of the cameras had filmed an Aardvark, the animal responsible for making the burrows I was doing my project on. At least I have seen one moving around in the time I was in South Africa (maybe it knew and said goodbye). I received data from Tanja of a different project, so I could make a report if I still needed to do that for school in order to complete my internship.

The last couple of days I spent on helping Toni getting as much data for her as possible, and I went on a walk with Floris on Thursday to sort of say goodbye to the reserve.

Friday was my flight, we went to Polokwane at 7 am to do some shopping for the trip, and at around 4 pm Tanja dropped the group that went back off at Polokwane airport. This group cosisted of me, Floris, Toni and Quirinda and Svea, a German intern at the lodge. The flight from Polokwane to Joburg was an amazingly fun one, we had a lot of laughter in the hour we were flying, and after that laughter came sadness as we had to say goodbye to Toni and Svea as their flight to Europe was on Saturday.

At 2355 we flew off to the Netherlands, leaving the beautiful country of South Africa behind. The departure was bittersweet, as I was as excited to go home as I was sad to leave Africa.

This will naturally be my final entry, as my internship is over. Thanks for stopping by and reading my experiences of this very fun, but sadly cut short adventure of an internship. Maybe until a next internship! (there's more coming later in my study and I'm surely blogging these as well!)
